xD READER 17776

xD SPACE is meeting to scan, interpret, and process Jon Bois' 17776 on the xDISCORD until May 27, 2026.

In the universe of Jon Bois' anti-sci-fi book about football games in a future in which humans are immortal, April 7, 2026, is the fabled day where humans stopped dying, aging, or being born.

xD READER is for text-based planes of expression, and for its second iteration, we're exploring 17776 by John Bois (2017), an innovative and adventurous piece of literature that assumes the space of the website (the sports website SB Nation in particular) as a medium. Thousands of years in the future, three sentient space probes linked through quantum space tell of immortal Americans unfailingly obsessed with football, which has taken on planetary scales.

Bois' story, whose "whole point" was to "give the reader a good time," instrumentalizes full-screen images, GIFs, YouTube videos, colored text, and a liberal dose of Google Earth imagery, all unlocked through the familiar gesture of scrolling down.

What could the weird underbelly of a paradigm of true abundance actually look like taken to its extremes? If there were no suffering and our unending lives became a platform for us to "perpetually hang out," how could our humanity shine through, and what forms could it take as the centuries blur into millennia? And just what would newly sentient machinery think of all this?

Join our biweekly meetings on the xDISCORD exclusively to dig into these questions and many more. At xD READER, the aims are convivial and exploratory rather than pedagogical. Reach out to us for an invite link!

We'll meet on:

April 29th (Chapter 1-10)

May 13th (Chapter 11-18)

May 27th (Chapter 19-25)

Enjoy the ride and see you soon!
